Paul Archer

Paul Archer is a poet, lyricist and translator.

His poems are triggered by sharply focused observation of the present and then spread out in new directions that reveal the extraordinary that underlies the ordinary.

Dynamo Memory: book of poems by Paul Archer

Dynamo Memory is a compelling collection of poems inspired by his time spent in England, Japan and Mallorca. They explore how memories of the past merge with present day realities and enrich them with new meanings and perspectives. Poignant and deeply moving, and often lightened by a wry sense of humour, the poems are written in an immediate style that appeals to a wide range of readers. Among his previous publications is 'Natural Causes', a limited edition portfolio of poems and etchings produced in collaboration with the artist Geoff MacEwan whose work is held in the National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh, the V&A in London, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and other public collections. Some photos of the 'Natural Causes' etchings are show below.

In his work as a translator, Paul Archer has translated poems by Kotaro Takamura, Federico Garcia Lorca, Miguel de Cervantes, Antonio Colinas, Mario Benedetti, Eugenio Montale and Ingeborg Bachmann among others. The aim of his English translations is to bring the poetry that he admires to a wider audience. His translations of Takamura's 'Chieko' collection of poems and Lorca's 'El Diván del Tamarit' and 'Sonetos del Amor Oscuro' are particularly well-known.

His lyrics embrace various genres ranging from classical to pop and jazz. Several of his lyrics for classical music have been set by composers and have received performances in concerts and on CD. Click on the lyrics link on the left for more details.

Paul graduated from the University of Oxford with a degree in English Language and Literature. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and has lived in London, Tokyo and Mallorca.
