You reach happiness
(English translation of 'Felicità raggiunta' by Eugenio Montale)
You reach happiness when it walks
through you on the edge of a blade.
To the eye you’re a faint light that flickers,
below your feet, tense ice that fractures;
and so those who love you most cannot touch you.
If you chance upon souls inflicted
by sadness and brighten them, your morning
is soft and flustered like a nest in the eaves.
But nothing consoles the tears of the child
whose balloon flies away among the houses.
