Brown-haired girl, give me a kiss
Brown-haired girl, give me a kiss.
- "What did you say?"
You heard what I said.
- "Go away, leave me alone!
Don't be so forward,
I'm not just anyone, you know."
Grant what I ask,
don't be so disagreeable,
see the hold you have on my life,
my constant suffering,
and how you captivate me.
Give me a kiss
out of kindness, I beg you.
English translation by Paul Archer of the text of Morenica, dame un beso a villancico by Juan Vásquez (1500-1560) from Villancicos y canciones a tres y a cuatro, Osuna, 1551, arranged for voice and vihuela by Miguel de Fuenllana (1500-1579) and published in Orphénica Lyra, Seville, 1554.
Morenica, dame un beso
Morenica, dame un beso.
—¿Como es esso?
Aquesto que has oydo
—Oxe, ¡afuera!
No seáis tan atrevido,
mirad que no soy quien quiera.
-Dame lo que te demando,
no seas desagradecida,
mira que tienes mi vida,
continuamente penando,
y pues tú me tienes preso.
Dame un beso,
que de merced te lo pido.
Recording. Ensemble Fretwork. A beautiful voice but more attention could have been paid to the meaning of the words!
