I am a poor maggot bag! Just a few weeks ago I was
Full of life, walking straight and beautiful like a deer,
People spoke highly of me and I was warmly welcomed,
I lie here now stretched out, reduced to skin and bones;
My limbs are dying, my eyes glaze over.
Did I once enjoy being bedecked in gold?
Friends, cover your mouths and noses, I stink.
Oh God! How my pomp and splendour reeks!
Young girls and women, come and see yourselves in me!
Learn here what pride is and status, appearance and adornment!
You see, I must depart, my life will close.
Farewell all of you, and take good account of this!
Think how death has made me so hideous!
I am only dancing on ahead, you will have to follow me.

Ich armer Madensack! der ich vor wenig Wochen
Belebt, gerad und schön gleich einem Hirsche gieng
Und hoch geehret ward und manchen Gruß empfieng
Lieg hie nun hergestreckt und bin nur Haut vnd Knochen;
Die Glieder sterben mir, die Augen sind gebrochen.
War dieses, daß ich mich mit Golde so behieng?
Ihr Freünde, haltet Mund und Nase zu, ich stinck.
Ach Gott! so wird mein Pracht und Übermut gerochen!
Ihr Jung- und Frauen kompt, kompt spiegelt euch in mir!
Lernt hie, was Hochmut sei, was Stand, Gestalt und Zier!
Ihr seht, ich muß davon, mein Leben wil sich schließen.
Lebt alle wol, und habt euch stets in guter acht!
Gedenkt wie mich der Todt so scheüßlich hat gemacht!
Ich tanzte nur voran, jhr werdet folgen müssen.
