Time to wake up

Time to wake up, open your eyes,
don’t sleep when I’m not sleeping
and if my being alive is dear to you,
open your eyes and wake up.
Time to wake up...

Sleep no more, hear the song
of one who is desparate for you,
afflicted by so great a love
that he wanders up and down
lamenting so loudly
that his cries wake you up.
Time to wake up...

So sleep no more, my lady,
and let pity rouse your heart
for I'm not strong enough anymore
to restrain my deep desire;
if you have the least bit of love in you,
hear my song and wake up.
Time to wake up...

English translation by Paul Archer of the text of Sù, sù, leva by Bartolomeo Tromboncino (1470-after 1534) from Frottole, Ottaviano Petrucci (1509).

Sù, sù, leva

Sù, sù, leva, alza le ciglia,
Non dormir chè non dorm’io
E se hai caro el viver mio
apri li occhi e te resviglia
Sù, sù, leva...

Lassa il somno et odi il canto
D'un che va per te penando
E che affetto è d'amor tanto,
che e per te va quinci errando
e sì forte lamentando,
che col strido te resviglia.
Sù, sù, leva…

Lassa adonque, o donna, il somno
E pietà ti svegli il core
Chè mie forze più non ponno
Riparar a un tanto ardore;
e se hai dramma in te d'amore,
odi il canto e te resviglia.
Sù, sù, leva…
