I’m a mountain girl,
I come from Extremadura.
May fortune favour me!

saddened by what I fear.

and I burn uncontrollably.

English translation by Paul Archer of the text of Soy serranica by an anonymous composer and published in the Cancionero de Upsala, 1556. The word 'Estremadura' in the second line below could refer to the historic province of Portugal by that name, but is generally accepted to refer to the Extremadura region of western Spain that borders Portugal and has the Sierra mountain ranges that rise to 2,400 metres.
