The Gardener

Rudi came unannounced "Will you let me in?"
His scooter parked in the lane, hand on the gate's latch.
He felt the curled orange tree leaves, sniffed them.
"They don't look happy". We ask him what we should do.
"All they need, is water... water... water."

"How often will you be here?" As much as we can, we say,
Perhaps a week each month. "That's more than most,
Their homes are empty nearly all the year. That's something
I'll never understand." He tosses back his hippy-length hair.
"All I need is one house... one garden... one woman".
